Dr. Joseph (Scott) Brown, a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) and Fellow in the Academy of Advanced Diagnostic Physicians (FADP), boasts a rich professional history spanning nearly four decades. Since founding Brown Chiropractic in 1985, he has served as a trusted provider of chiropractic care, notably as the team doctor for various sports teams including the University of Tennessee Ski Team, Knoxville Rugby Club, and Knoxville Professional Hockey Team. Graduating Cum Laude from Life Chiropractic College in 1984 and being a member of the National Dean's List underscores his academic prowess.
Dr. Brown holds certifications in Impairment and Disability Rating, Industrial Rehabilitation, Manipulations Under Anesthesia, and is a Certified Impact Provider for multidisciplinary concussion management. His contributions to the field are further showcased through publications in the American Chiropractic Association Journal, focusing on the treatment of soft tissue injuries, as well as documenting injuries and treating patients involved in motor vehicle accidents. Dr. Brown's expertise has been recognized by the Knoxville News Sentinel and City View Magazine, where he has been voted Best Chiropractor multiple years.
Dr. Brown is a leader in a multidisciplinary approach to care, as evidenced by the establishment of Optimal Health PLLC, a pioneering multidisciplinary clinic. Through Optimal Health PLLC, Dr. Brown collaborates seamlessly with Medical Specialists, Medical Doctors, and Physical Therapists, ensuring comprehensive treatment plans for his patients.
In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Brown leads a fascinating life. He was invited to the 1980 and 1984 Olympic training camps for Greco Roman Wrestling, showcasing his athleticism and dedication to sports. Furthermore, Dr. Brown displayed his competitive spirit by finishing 5th in the world as the driver of his boat, "Bad To The Bone," in Offshore racings Offshore Professional Tour (OPT) and Super Boat Racing (SBR) held in Key West, Florida. These experiences highlight Dr. Brown's diverse interests and passion for excellence in all endeavors.
Beyond his professional and athletic pursuits, Dr. Brown finds his passion in traveling and embracing life with his wife Stephanie, while cherishing moments with family. Central to his practice is a steadfast belief in the power of faith, recognizing that "the power that made the body heals the body," a guiding principle that shapes his approach to patient care.

Dr. D Sean Newport, D.C. received his Undergraduate Study at the University of Florida, where he received a degree in Cardiopulmonary Technology. He graduated Cum Laude at Liberty University where he received his Doctor of Chiropractic Degree along with his B.S. in Nutrition. Since that time he has received numerous professional certifications in Advanced Diagnostics and Clinical Procedures. Dr. Newport received various certifications and licenses from The Physicians Academy in Dallas, TX and the National Board of Chiropractic, which include impairment and disability rating and (MUA) Manipulation Under Anesthesia Certifications. Dr. Newport’s special interests include the treatment of sports related injuries along with joint conditions of the shoulders, arms, hands, legs and feet. He has vast experience and success in the painless non-surgical treatment of cervical and lumbar disc conditions. Dr. Newport also has nearly 17 years experience in the successful treatment of Personal Injury Cases, Workman’s Compensation and Auto Injuries in which he has appeared on numerous occasions as a expert-witness in court. Dr. Newport excels in many hobbies and sports including snow skiing, golf, boating, horseback riding and playing guitar.  Dr. Newport is a big fan of UT football and he enjoys spending time and traveling with his wife and three children.

Dr. Richard Mays, MD is a family physician who has been in private practice in Knoxville, TN since 1978. He is board certified in two different medical specialties, the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) and the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM). He is board eligible for the American Board of Integrative Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), the Tennessee Medical Association (TMA) and the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP) as well as several other professional societies such as Who’s Who Among American Professionals.

Dr. Mays did his undergraduate training at University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky from 1976-1980, where he double majored in Mathematics and Chemistry. While there he achieved the status of High Honor every year and was a member of the J.T. Vallandingham Society (the highest honor bestowed upon a student at the University of the Cumberlands). Dr. Mays then attended medical school at the University of Kentucky-Lexington where he graduated in the top 25% of the class in 1984. Dr. Mays completed his residency training program in Family Medicine at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville from 1984-1987.

In 2008, Dr. Mays authored “The Bible Diet” a book which discussed Biblical principles on healthy eating and disease prevention. Dr. Mays has traveled for speaking engagements on diet, nutrition, and healthy living all over the South-Eastern United States. Dr. Mays has special interest in nutrition, obesity, disease prevention as well as chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, adrenal fatigue, diabetes, and other fatigue syndromes.

On a personal note: Dr. Mays has a strong faith in God and has taught at multiple churches the Biblical healing principles and spiritual laws. Dr. Mays is married to his wife of 38 years and has 3 beautiful adult daughters, 3 great sons-in-law, and three grandchildren. Dr. Mays enjoys organic gardening, hiking, photography, basketball, and antique collecting.

Charles H. Means, D.C. received his Undergraduate Study of Pre-Med at the University of Pittsburgh. He received his Doctorate of Chiropractic Degree at Life Chiropractic College in Marietta, GA, where he also completed his Chiropractic Internship. Since 1994, Dr. Means has been receiving professional certifications in advanced diagnostic and clinical procedures such as (MUA) Manipulations Under Anesthesia Certifications from numerous organizations including the Physician’s Academy in Dallas, TX and the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Dr. Means specializes in the treatment and management of advanced degeneration conditions of the spine, cervical and lumbar disc lesions including ruptured and herniated discs and pediatric scoliosis. He has successfully treated over 25,000 new patients in his career and performed over 500,000 spinal adjustments. With his experience and reputation, he is routinely referred to by medical doctors in Knoxville to manage their patients who are facing surgery. Dr. Means is widely known for his results on patients slated for surgery. On a personal note, Dr. Means has two beautiful children and is married to the love of his life. He helped support his education by playing guitar and singing in Atlanta, GA and in Western Pennsylvania. When idle from work he enjoys spending time with his family, camping, fishing, and traveling.

Dr. Sam Nia studied his undergraduate pre-med work at East Tennessee State University. He received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree at Life University of Marietta, Georgia where he also completed his Internship and received his National Board of Chiropractic Examiners certification. Since 1998, Dr. Nia has completed post graduate studies in advanced sports medicine and rehabilitation. He is a certified corporate ergonomics trainer and strongly believes in being an excellent communicator with his patients in order to be an effective doctor. He helped to treat over 40,000 patients as part of a mission trip to Russia and co-authored the book, “Improving Your Life Pro-Actively.” Dr. Nia enjoys playing golf, snow skiing, and traveling.

John Wier NP-C joined Brown Chiropractic and Optimal Health in 2015 after graduating Lincoln Memorial Family Nurse Practitioner program. Before becoming part of the team he practiced as an Emergency Medicine Registered Nurse at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge, Tennessee for nearly a decade.

John has been married to his wonderful wife Katina for 19 years. He has no children but cherishes time spent with his wonderful nieces Adriana and Kasi. His hobbies include boating, shooting, and vacationing at the beach with family.

Dr. Daniel Wilder received his B.S. degree in Rehabilitative Science from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2003. After receiving his degree there, he then went into the Graduate Physical Therapy program at UTC, where he then earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree in 2005. During his time as a Physical Therapy Clinician, he served as Director of Rehab Services for an over 200+ bed skilled nursing facility and gained experience working in outpatient orthopedic clinics.

Dr. Wilder has treated a variety of Orthopedic and Neurological conditions ranging from acute/chronic Spinal conditions, Stroke Rehabilitation, Vertigo/Vestibular dysfunctions, post-surgical rehab of multiple extremities (hips, knees, shoulders, and ankles), post CVA Rehabilitation, and general debility/balance disturbances, all with positive functional outcomes. He has attended numerous post graduate courses focusing on Stroke Rehabilitation and improving manual therapy skills so that he can maximize patient’s functional outcomes.

In addition, outside of the clinic, Dr. Wilder enjoys going to UT football and basketball games, spending time outdoors, traveling, going to concerts and spending time with his family.
